This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are motivated by their dreams. The 12 and 13 year old's in my classroom yearn for success and opportunities. These students ask critical questions about the world around them and why things are not equitable in our society. They see and are impacted by the violence in our communities. Summer vacations don't provide much solace because their parents fear for their child's safety. Regardless of the social and economic burdens that follow my students, they work hard because they see glimmers of a better tomorrow.
My Project
We spend so much time in the classroom thus, the space should be inviting, interesting, and appealing to students. A history class should feel like a history class. This project is about the authenticity and the environment of space that students occupy each day. The materials we are asking for range from world flags, history poster and art. Learning about the world is more interesting with visual images. Furthermore, the posters we are asking for are of important world figures such as Gandhi and the Black Panther Party, which are often not presented in Middle School classrooms. Students need to see and hear about individuals who made major contributions to history and look like them. Authentic global and historical education begins when students see themselves in the figures they are learning about. Having a classroom that represents that multiculturalism will make the space more conducive to learning.
