Do you remember the first time when you started coming to appreciate the beauty of Chinese calligraphy? Would you like to develop a skill in learning how to use Chinese brush? If your answer is yes, then this class is definitely for you. Don't miss this great opportunity to share your calligraphy!
My students are public high school students.
The majority of them are American born Chinese. In other words, their parents or grandparents have immigrated to the United States. Like other high school students, they are involved in school clubs, sports teams, volunteer organizations, debates, etc. Almost all of them will continue studying at a four-year college after graduation. Many of them want to continue their cultural heritage and customs. Since most American high school students will benefit from learning cross-cultural project-based class activities, they will no doubt apply their experience in learning Chinese calligraphy into other avenues of their learning. Through art work, they will all become great communicators.
My Project
Learning to write Chinese characters is not as easy as most non-native speakers thought. Yet it will become fun and enjoyable once you have discovered the hidden treasure of the forms and meaning of each Chinese character. Resources such as introducing certain styles of Chinese calligraphy, using different brushes, teaching the proper way of holding brush and applying calligraphy into the needs of daily life will be gradually introduced to my students before they actually sit down and practice on using brush, paper and ink. The primary goal for doing this project is to help my students become more appreciated of one of the most important aspects of Chinese cultures - calligraphy. They need calligraphy brushes for each class, particular paper for completing this project, and ink with different colors. By learning this art form, my students can also help other kids at school to enjoy more Chinese calligraphy.
Due to the school budget cut, there will be no money left to purchase something that can help students enrich and broaden their mind about the world different than their own.
I believe that students are technology-savvy but they need a calligraphy class for them to come to more appreciative about the beauty of Chinese calligraphy. The broad impact this project will have on my students is to build a connection between the East and the West. They will become the best diplomats.
