Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a school in which 94% of students are socioeconomically disadvantaged and 54% are English language learners. The students I work with everyday battle tremendous challenges but are incredibly bright and resilient. They will make great strides this year despite the adversity they face.
My fifth graders have unlimited potential but could achieve so much more with increased focus and presence of mind.
The weight that many of my students carry on their shoulders is far beyond what any eleven-year-old should have to handle.
My Project
As a first year teacher, I notice that my students have a very difficult time regulating their emotions and maintaining self-control. I developed a Zen Zone to try to help them relax and acknowledge the impact they have on the climate of the classroom. We reflect on inspirational “Quotes of the Day”, and address specific concerns and traits such as empathy in our community meetings. I believe the tools I will acquire through this training will help my students in insurmountable ways.
At the end of my training, I will be a certified yoga instructor and qualified to lead wellness classes for my students and school community.
There is a lot of trauma in our surrounding area. We have seen a rise in violence attributable to over-crowded living quarters. Many of my students live in households with extended family. The majority of our students are living in poverty. In a school like mine, teaching wellness sends a message to students that they matter, despite the many outside forces telling them otherwise. Wellness tools like mindfulness and yoga empower students to love, take care of, and advocate for themselves.
