The August Wilson Project is life change-studying/performing Wilson, students become Renaissance men and women. The idea is to "Be the change you wish to see in the world." We will break stereotypes and heighten social justice by walking in excellence. Our NYC trip is an important part of the journey.
We are a class of high school students intensely focused on excellence and social justice for all marginalized peoples.
We come from varied backgrounds, and areas of the globe, but share several traits. We are young. We are hopeful. We see ourselves as potential game-changers. We are on a journey to develop our best, strongest selves so we can then be valuable assets to create positive change.
As African Americans, reading and performing plays from August Wilson's Pittsburg cycle, our goals are to create change, raise consciousness, and achieve excellence as African Americans. We believe that, as we achieve those goals, we will be advocates for justice, excellence, and life change across cultures. Our study of Wilson is the starting point for discussion on this. Our August Wilson performance will bring those ideas to our audiences.
My Project
Attending Sistas and visiting the World Trade Center Memorial will deepen our pride in our heritage as Black men and women and deepen our pride as Americans. As our teacher/leader, my dream is for the whole NYC experience to create deep, dynamic leaders. To help with that, I know I need to level the playing field. These students do not have the financial means to travel to places like New York, attend Broadway shows, and visit Ellis Island and the World Trade Center Memorial.
With the help of generous donors from Donors Choose and other organizations, I will make those opportunities available. Experiences like this will help them become Renaissance men and women who can be game-changers, not only in seeking justice for all marginalized peoples, but in the world in general.
The August Wilson project is changing the lives of the the young men and women in our troupe.
This trip will be an eye opening experience that these young people have never had before. The whole world can be their's with hard work and vision. This trip is a taste of what the world has to offer and an inspiration to achieve.
