We are first grade teachers that will loop with the same students to the second grade. Our school population is approximately 270 students consisting of 130 male students and 129 female students. Our population is composed of Asian, Black, White and Multi-racial students. Approximately forty five students will benefit from this project during a two-year time span.
Our goal is to encourage children to develop new vocabulary, expose them to new ideas and skills, and promote better reading and writing success at school. We would like to have an expanded listening center in our classrooms that would accommodate four to six students actively listening to the same story. We are in need of larger listening center tables with four to six headphones. We also need more books on cassette. The listening center will help auditory learners build new strategies for reading and expose them to new words and literacy skills. By focusing on auditory learning styles, students that do not learn through traditional methods will be given a diverse approach to become more successful readers. By listening to books on cassette, students can hear what a fluent reader sounds like. From the enunciation given by the author, the students will also learn correct word pronounciation. The students will increase their vocabulary through expansion of reading materials. This will enable the students to use new vocabulary and techniques for fluency in reading and in their writing process.
An extension of this learning style will be the opportunity for students to check out books on cassette and "walk-mans" to use at home. Students will be able to take books and cassettes home for extended learning, which will enable parents to become more involved in their child's education. After students complete a book on cassette, they will be able to successfully take an Accelerated Reading test that will check for comprehension of the story. This will give them a chance for multiple readings to improve their reading and listening comprehension. Parents will become more involved in their child's academic achievement, which will help them reach a higher level of reading development.
By addressing the students auditory needs,they will become better readers. This will enable them to increase their reading levels so all students are at or above grade level.
