This will be my fourth year teaching in Salt Lake City, UT. I have taught second grade for three years and now I am moving down to Kindergarten! I love teaching the younger grades and find that they have an incredible thirst for knowledge. I have never taught such a young group of students and I am finding that my classroom is lacking a lot of the things that it needs to keep these students learning and engaged.
In my experience, the best way to reach students is to create a classroom community of learners.
We spend a lot of time getting to know one another and learning about all the different members of our classroom community. My goal this year is to get the Kindergarteners excited about learning in order to create lifelong learners.
My Project
I chose some audiobooks, and devices to create a listening center for my kindergarteners and some equipment for recess each day.
The listening center will allow students to listen to reading while following along in the book.
Hearing someone else read fluently is a good teaching practice for young readers. It also allows them practice with new words, and sharing books with a partner during the centers.
The PE equipment will help my students play appropriately at recess. Right now, I have no equipment for them to play with. They run and play on the playground, but a lot of them would benefit greatly from a ball to throw around or kick, and jump around with the jump ropes.
