Our school is a Title I (high poverty) school in Oregon. We are also a school in improvement. This means that we are receiving federal funds to help improve our academic test scores. When we first began the grant five years ago, only 25% of students were reading at grade level. Now, 75% of our students are reading at grade level!
Our principal said it best: "Learning to read is a civil right." Every student who walks through our doors has that right.
I have the honor of teaching some amazing kids who happen to come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Although we got a brand-new school this year, we are yet to have the same amazing technology many other schools in our district have. Our students deserve the same!
My Project
My students recently got one-to-one Chromebooks, and the possibilities feel endless! We've been using various audio recording apps, but it's so hard to hear students reading in their recordings because of the background noise. With 28 students all recording themselves at the same time, it's very difficult to hear individual voices.
These headphones and retro handsets will allow students to clearly record their reading and thinking.
Not only will students be able to hear their classmates' recordings, but parents will be able to listen to their child's recordings as well. Students will also be so excited and motivated to use these new tools to record themselves.
