Reading is challenging! Many of my students struggle with the challenging content I teach, especially classic literature. With the help of audiobooks, they can learn to love the classics!
My students are 10th and 11th graders at an urban high school in Western Washington.
My classes are inclusion Language Arts, which means half of my students have special needs and half of my students are general education students. As a school, we are determined to provide all students with access to a rigorous and engaging curriculum. My students with special needs sometimes need extra support, like audiobooks, to participate fully in class. The students are hysterical and brilliant young people that will change the world before you know it!
My Project
I have requested two copies of audiobooks for some of the books we'll read this year. My 10th grade students will read Brave New World and Animal Farm and my 11th grade students will read the Crucible and the Great Gatsby. Many of my students are struggling readers; I will be able to loan out these CDs to my students so they can take them home and listen to the book while following along. For many students, this will be motivation to complete required reading at home. I've also requested a copy of Persepolis on DVD. We will read Persepolis in my 10th grade class and I want students to be able to engage with the text in another medium.
My students are ready to grapple with major questions: What is the American dream?
What is the connection between individuals and society? How do we participate in a community and maintain our agency and independence?
These audiobooks will guarantee that all students, especially students with special needs, can do higher order thinking without being restricted by their struggles with reading.
