I have been a teacher for many years and have experienced many challenges, but my students have always been kind and caring and willing to work hard. In our classrooms, we strive to teach each child lifelong learning skills in technology, global literacy, creativity, and critical thinking to enhance family, career, and community.
Despite the struggles our students face in their home lives, they come to school ready to work hard.
Most of our students live in poverty, over 80% are on free and reduced meals, and come from a variety of cultural backgrounds with over 50% speaking at least two languages, some three languages.
Students in my class need opportunities for books to be read to them. Research has shown that it is beneficial to listen to books as well as read books to improve our reading abilities.
As a child we all enjoyed the times a parent or teacher read a book to us.
This is true today. I would like to give my students that opportunity at home. Many of their families do not read English and cannot give them more exposure to the English language at home. By using the MP3 player, I will be able to send home a "book on tape" to my most neediest students. They will be able to listen to and follow along with a book checked out from the library. This will give them the exposure to the English language they need to improve their reading, listening and speaking abilities.
