Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am requesting an audio book display system for the Media Center. Through a federal grant, we were able to purchase a collection of 80 audio books for our Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade classes to help students with their reading and literacy skills. Now that we have established this beginning collection of audio books, I am eager for a versatile and easy to use display unit so that teachers can easily locate the titles they want. We currently do not have a way to display our audio book bags which contain a CD or cassette tape and book. The different size bags either do not fit on regular book shelves or the bags slide off the shelves making it hard to find the desired book. A media display rack would allow us to hang each bag in an organized manner and would make them so much easier for our teachers and students to use.
Our school continues to grow. There are currently 700 students enrolled. Student ethnicity is 86% minority and 14% white. The majority of our students (93%) receive free or reduced lunches. Most of our students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and cannot afford to buy books. The school Media Center is a primary source of reading for pleasure and information for our students. We are excited to have a new collection of audio books to use with our students. Audio books are an important way for starting or struggling readers to develop listening and comprehension skills particularly non-English language speakers.
As the Media Coordinator at our school, I am eager to create a comfortable, welcoming environment in the Media Center and fun, interactive lessons that help students develop a positive attitude toward libraries and reading. I also work closely to collaborate with classroom teachers in planning student literacy activities and to provide the resources they need to create effective lessons for their students. The audio book display would greatly improve the organization and accessibility of our audio book collection. Our budget and PTA funding are both extremely limited and will not provide funding for requests such as this.
