Ī teach 7th grade students who are going to school during Covid 19, wearing masks, adhering to social distancing rules, and doing the best they can to have a normal school year. Our students are a mix of general and special education learners and are taught in a co-teaching environment with two teachers. Our students have both heart and a sense of humor.
Our students love to prepare presentations, readings and engage in improvisation for the class.
However, due to Covid and the wearing of masks for safety, their audience usually cannot hear them clearly which detracts greatly from successful presentation.
Our students are eager to learn and learn best through hands-on activities especially through drama. We take our the characters from our texts and perform in role using improvisation, reading lines and writing dialog.
My Project
My students love to have discussions about the books we are reading and the topics we are covering. We often read scripts out loud with students playing the multiple characters and performing for the class. The problem is we cannot hear one another and we lose interests when we can't hear our classmates.
By providing each student with a way to amplify their voice, all students will be heard whether they are doing a read out loud, engaging in a script with other students or exploring ideas with one another.
This quarter we will be reading Touching Spirit Bear. I have adapted the novel into a play and students will choose their parts, practice lines and perform for their classmates. These materials will bring back classroom discussions and reading out loud despite being masked during these perilous times.
