My students need fine motor and sensory materials to individualize their learning so that they may successfully participate in their modified curriculum. We need a class divider.
The students I service in our center based program for children with autism in 4th-5th grades come from different areas of the county. Each child is unique in their abilities and require more support than neuro-typical peers. It is the job of both myself and my staff to meet each of our special learners where they are and aid in unlocking their potential. My goal is for them to grow as learners as well as individuals, so that they may be as independent as possible when they leave the educational system.
Temple Grandin put it best when she said "There needs to be a lot more emphasis on what a child can do, instead of what he cannot do."
My Project
Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) possess a wide variety of skills, strengths, interests and needs. Many educational programs for children on the autism spectrum focus on building independence through goal setting in the areas of speech and communication, problem solving, functional living skills and academic content areas, such as math and reading.
Programming for a variety of abilities requires a variety of materials.
These materials will help our students in many focus areas, so they can be successful and more independent in their learning process. Sensory activities and materials helps people on the spectrum calm and focus, so that they can process what is being presented to them effectively.
