I am a fourth grade teacher in a school where 85% of our children qualify and receive free lunch. Even though it would appear that these children do not have all the advantages that some schools have, I don't want the word disadvantaged to ever hinder these children from learning and achieving all that is possible. I believe that children learn best through manipulatives that they can touch and see. When a child can manipulate items and learn a concept, they take ownership of that concept and will remember what they have learned. I believe that Science is one area that you cannot teach without children being able to move around and manipulate the materials. Part of the fourth grade Science curriculum is to teach a unit on magnetism. To read about and grasp the concept of how a magnet will either attract or repel is very hard to do without using a real magnet. How will a child know how a compass works without making one? I am requesting magnetic materials that will enable my children to manipulate and take ownership of concepts that cannot be attained through just reading about. I hope that by enabling my children to see science at work it might just ATTRACT someone to become a scientist and who knows what they could do.
