My adorable crew come from a community where poverty is prevalent and potential homelessness looms large in their daily lives. Teachers at our school are well aware that the school is considered to be a safe haven for many of these students. It is one of the few positive constants in their lives and a place where they know they will be safe, be fed, be listened to, and cared for during the seven hours they are with us. For me, personally, it is a huge responsibility to be the best I can be every day for my little crew.
I recently moved from teaching 5th and 6th grade for 25 years to 1st grade.
I am so incredibly happy with the change but want so much to make my classroom a warm, welcoming, motivating and active place of experiential learning. The needs of 1st graders are vastly different than the needs of 6th graders! I learned quickly that 1st graders need to move around and move often! Because of this, I am seeking funding to purchase flexible seating options.
The needs of 1st graders are vastly different than the needs of 6th graders! I learned quickly that 1st graders need to move around and move often. We spend lots of 2 to 3 minute breaks standing up and doing fun Go Noodle “Brain Gym” types of activities, but sitting in stiff metal chairs and trying to work can be a real “pain in the butt!” Because of this, I am seeking funding for 12 stationary balance balls that will make our room much more comfortable and learner friendly! So many first graders need the kinesthetic stimulation that flexible seating provides in order to stay better focused and on task.
