Children are like sponges; they soak in information from the stimuli surrounding them. Many of us have heard this saying or one similar to it. If it is true, then why is there such a gap in student achievement?
My students attend school in a low income/high poverty school district.
They face many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Too often these children are forced to grow up and deal with things that we as adults would not want to deal with. Many students live with hunger and wonder where there next meal will come from. Some students come to school with trauma and others just struggle to learn the language.
Some students may have access to computers or electronic devices outside of school, but many do not. Students often do not have yards to play in and therefore, spend most of their time inside or hanging out on their stoops. Despite so many hardships, my kids come to school everyday because they want to be here! They want to learn. I want to give them the tools that will help them to learn and create an environment that will keep them coming back!
My Project
The center materials that were chosen for this project will have a huge impact on my students education. In our classroom we have 28 students and half of those students are English Language Learners. Many of the materials chosen have visuals and hands on features that will support student learning, specifically ELLs and Special Education students. The sentence builder offers a visual and hands on aspect that will support both my ELLs and Special Education students. The Hot Dots is another great material that will support all my students in reading, but especially my ELLs and Special Ed. It provides a visual and a battery operated pen that alerts students if they have chosen the correct word. These are just a few of the types of materials my students would benefit from using at centers.
Having high interest, quality materials that students can use ensures that they will remain on task and gain a wealth of knowledge from each center.
These materials will support my students in writing, reading, phonemic awareness skills, working with math manipulatives and more. They will be able to work both independently and collaborate with other students using the materials.
My first grade students have made great strides this year. They are hungry for new and exciting center materials. The addition of these materials in centers will quench my student's thirst for knowledge.
