Attention, Read All About It, Kids in Charge Of Learning.
My students need six Kindle eReaders so that groups of kids can work on the same story without taking up space in the classroom with paper copies of the book.
I work in a Title I school in AZ, and am a strong believer in using literature studies to advance my students' understanding. Whether the student is in resource, a typical learner or an advanced learner, they all benefit from reading books in different genres, at different levels and about different situations that help them problem solve, think critically and to develop empathy for others.
“Students do not learn much just sitting in classes listening to teachers, memorizing prepackaged assignments, and spitting out answers.
They must talk about what they are learning, write reflectively about it, relate it to past experiences, and apply it to their daily lives. They must make what they learn part of themselves.” - Arthur W. Chickering and Stephen
C. Ehrmann
My students need six Kindle eReaders so they can take charge of their learning and choose a book of their choice so they can do lit studies in a book club format with other students in the class.
My Project
My school is piloting a new type of learning, it's Blended Learning. It is a way to allow the students the opportunity to be in charge of their learning. Giving them options on what and how they read. Allowing them the chance to work with various students in the class, they can decided how quickly they progress through a story. Learning how to debate and support their decisions using text based evidence.
“In order to create an engaging learning experience, the role of instructor is optional, but the role of learner is essential.” - Bernard Bull
All students are held to learning and meeting the same standards, they are just doing it on a book of their choice. Assessments will be done throughout the book, making sure the standards are being met. There will be meetings with the teacher where the students will have an indepth conversations about what they have learned, connections they have made, supporting their opinions with textual evidence. At the end they will have a choice of how they show what they have learned. Do they create a slide show, write a paper, write a newspaper article, create a play, their options are limited only by their imagination. Again giving the students the power of their learning.
