Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students share everything - even their germs. Four hundred coughing mouths, drippy noses, and pairs of germy hands visit my classroom every week. My students share the same books, instruments, desks, and pencils, and I worry about the bacteria and germs that are left behind for the next students.
I teach music to about 400 first through fifth graders in a Hispanic and African-American dominated urban school.
Music is not considered to be part of the core curriculum, so I am not given an annual budget to spend on my classroom. As a result, we are missing many classroom items that other districts take for granted.
My Project
This is why I am requesting boxes of tissues for runny noses, soap for sticky hands, and disinfectant wipes and spray for everything else in the classroom. By keeping the school equipment germ-free, my students will be healthier during the cold and flu season. This will directly lead to less absences, which means they will spend more time in school learning and playing and less time sick at home.
It may seem odd to request aid for such small, ordinary items.
However, if it means happier and healthier days in the classroom, then soap and tissues are items my students cannot do without. Your help will make it possible for my students to learn in a healthy environment--and that benefits everyone.
