My nonverbal students with moderate to severe disabilities are blessings and every small step forward shows a new mastery of skills they have worked hard to achieve. Everyday my students overcome communicative, social, cognitive and physical hurdles that show their diligence, courage, humor, perseverance and love. These students show so much strength through the challenges they are presented with and our school is in a county with one of the highest ACES (Adverse Childhood Experience Scale) scores in the state. 82% of our population in district is on free and reduced lunches and our district is currently facing a large budget cut. These students deserve the best and I refuse to let their disabilities, socioeconomic standing and/or geological location limit their access to a robust education. One that will target their functional life skills through technology, sensory supports, and other strategies required to meet their educational and everyday needs.
My Project
Students with disabilities face many challenges in their everyday lives and I want to limit the environmental hurdles I can control. Teaching challenges may arise from the pressures of cognitive, social, and/or sensory difficulties. It is highly important we first meet students basic needs before we can target the educational curriculum.
Allowing students to fidget and move during lessons can provide them with the sensory input or release required to improve focus and participation.
I'm requesting Wobble Chairs to give my students flexible seating choice. Optional seating is a great way to target sensory needs and the Wobble Chair has proven to be a great classroom tool. However, the one chair I have for the ten students that vary in needs and size does not suffice. These three Wobbles will allow multiple students to benefit from this tool at the same time.
