Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is an inner city school attended by the most amazing youth. Our students are incredible, dynamic individuals with unlimited potential. Our school represents many communities and stories and our shared story of schooling is one that we try to foster and write every new day that we share together. Unfortunately, given the on-going and escalating viral pandemic, students are having an even harder time being able to attend and engage in school.
The current pandemic is impacting children in many unfathomable ways, with learning taking a backseat to mental health needs.
Our kids are not only facing traditional obstacles in attending school due to transportation challenges or unstable housing for example, but now are even more compounded by health issues, family responsibilities, grief and fear. Quarantine, trauma and sadness is contributing to added layers of stress and anxiety in the academic environment which is impacting availability for school and learning.
Help us reinforce positive engagement and attendance in school by rewarding students who are able to commit to their future, one day at a time!
My Project
Recognizing attendance and acknowledging the efforts of each student being present for instruction, either remotely or in person, increases the likelihood that their commitment will continue. In addition, it also helps foster feelings of pride in self, self-concept and belief they can actualize.
The staff at our school and l would like to celebrate students who are actively showing a concerted effort to attend their classes.
This project will allow five students from each grade (9th, 10th, 11th and 12th) to be recognized for attending their classes every two weeks. We appreciate this can be a daunting task during such unprecedented times and want our students to know that we see, hear and acknowledge their dedication. Offering small tokens of recognition such as a pencil or scented pen, inspiration notebook or stress-ball, snack or self-care item to show we are aware of their triumphs, is a way to reach out and continue to foster connection, acknowledgement and celebration of success. Celebrating their steps now will lead to graduation and continued journeys of success later.
