My students attend a rural school of approximately 800 students in grades 4-6. We are a little unusual in our makeup but it works for us.
My classroom makeup is a mixture of abilities and personalities.
This makes for a lot of good cooperative learning and differentiation.
My students are active learners and we spend a lot of time moving and spreading out in our classroom. We spend a lot of time creating things and exploring and need a lot of space.
My Project
These materials will help my students to visualize the structure of atoms, molecules and compounds so they are better able to differentiate between the three. This is a difficult skill for them. But through much practice and repetition, I am hopeful that they are able to see the difference. They understand that atoms make molecules and elements make compounds, but they need to understand the more complex idea that all molecules are compounds, but not all compounds are molecules. Be able to build molecules and compounds and compare and contrast what makes up each will give them the visual they need to be successful with this.
