The students at this school, a Title I school in an urban area, come from a variety of backgrounds. We are a magnet elementary school with a new theme of play and ingenuity, and with that comes an increase in the number of ways in which students are able to explore, create and take risks in their learning.
The mission of the library is to create a diverse and inclusive collection that supports the academic, social and emotional growth of all students, develop and nurture an interest in books, and foster a life-long love of reading for enjoyment.
The vision is to create an environment where academics, play, creativity, and ingenuity merge.
My Project
The sports books in the library's fiction section are seriously lacking, both in number as well as in books that interest young readers. Students regularly check out non-fiction sports books, but struggle to find fiction titles that hold their interest, or are relevant to them.
The "Track" series would be a perfect addition to the collection - the characters are relatable and the text is engaging and relevant.
The titles selected for this project include sports that students are always looking to read about - most notably basketball and football, and the addition of these titles would significantly boost this area of the collection and reach readers who may otherwise leave the library empty-handed.
