My students come from families that are low-income, single-parent homes; some students live in poverty-stricken neighborhoods, and are members of a non-native English speaking household. These students are taught at an alternative campus that seeks to guide them to make better life choices and get them on the right track towards success. My students are great students who have the desire to learn and have a great love for technology.
Being that society has coined this generation as the 'tech-babies', it is inevitable that my students and all students love using technology.
However, although the students love technology, they have very minimal access to it outside of school. Many of the students I teach get most of their technology exposure while at school, in the classroom. Therefore, incorporating technology into school work will keep our students engaged, allow them to have fun while learning, and venture on to success!
My Project
At-risk students no longer need to be restricted by their unfortunate circumstances. Many students who are considered at-risk come from single-parent homes, non-native English speaking families, and/or poverty-stricken neighborhoods, etc. Most at-risk students lack the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed as a result of their limited access to technology.
Technology, such as: laptops, computers, iPads, etc., are in high demand in schools because staff and administrators have come to realize that access to these items is a gateway to success.
Hence, the determination to start the 'At-risk of Success!' project. By providing these laptop devices for students, it will enhance student engagement, increase academic grades, heighten student interest (because they love technology when they have access to it) and it will also allow teachers to lead students to a path of success. The use of technology piques students' interests and motivates them to learn and contribute their ideas in the classroom. It also equips them with research and communicative skills necessary to become successful adults in their communities. Granting at-risk students the same accessibility to technology as students who are not at-risk will help to close the learning gap and promote higher levels of success across the board.
