Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you walk into our classroom, you'll see a sea of eager faces who are desperate to explore the world around us. My students are kind, creative, hardworking, and fun-loving.
Despite growing up in Silicon Valley, many of my students are at a socio-economical disadvantage.
Most students receive free or reduced-price lunch and over half come to school from homes that don't speak English. They may not have access to books, devices, or even personal space, like other children in the same district. This leaves some of our students relying heavily on their classroom and teacher to provide a safe place filled with books and materials to explore, learn, and grow.
Despite the challenges they face, all of my students genuinely love learning and tackling challenging things. They love growing their brain through reading, singing, and any technology they can get their hands on!
As a teacher, I focus on the joy that I can bring to my class through positive empowerment. Although I have no control over what happens outside of school, I can help provide a loving and safe environment where students’ eyes are opened to their full potential each day.
My Project
The new global shelter in place has recently exposed one of the larger inequities that students across the world face: access to technology. Many of my students are ready and willing to study at home in order to say safe, but they lack the finances and resources to do so.
Although my students live in one of the greatest tech hubs in the nation, they are living below the poverty line without a smartphone, tablet, chromebook, etc.
They have no access to the digital world, where their schoolwork is now located. Teachers are now mandated to provide ALL learning through digital platforms, and children born into poverty are once again left without the opportunity to access education. These chromebooks will be the first step in making sure that some of my students will have an equal opportunity to access their learning from home.
