My Students
Our school is under the philosophy that taking attendance while students are learning from home is less of a punitive measure and more of a way to ensure our creative scholars have the academic and social-emotional support they need to be academically and social viable. “We just want to make sure we are providing support for our scholars, whatever that may be — whether it’s just a check-in, or some guidance around instruction, or some positive relationship connections.”
With the rapid transition to remote learning, it’s been a trying time for LMS Educators and Families.
After all, we've had a lot to figure out — from finding ways to bridge the digital divide to ensuring student security and privacy online.
A major challenge for our school is maintaining student attendance. Now that this novel coronavirus has pushed our school to close its doors and adopt a remote learning model, we saw a significant drop in class attendance.
As a school, we are thinking of creative ways to tackle attendance during this remote learning and providing and conducting significant outreach to students and families who need it the most to ensure they stay engaged in the virtual learning.
My Project
Every day a student is absent is a lost opportunity for learning. Too many absences not only can affect achievement for the absent student but also can disrupt learning for the entire class.
The ATTENDANCE works incentive program allows students that come to school (work) daily to earn points that are converted into a paycheck.
ATTENDANCE works to teach and provide scholars real-world experience as it relates to the world of work with the school serving as their first job. Teaching them the benefits of showing up to (school) work daily and doing a good job earns them hours that are converted into a paycheck that can be used at the school's online E-commerce store where they can purchase gift cards.
