I teach in the learning center. Throughout the day, my students come to us for small groups (like centers). Each group is approximately 30-45 minutes long.
I have on average 25 eager boys and girls who range from kindergarten to third grade.
My students are below average compared to their same-age peers; they come to the learning center for specialized academic services. They enjoy coming to my classroom to learn because it is a positive and engaging atmosphere.
My Project
I teach students with special needs. Some of them have difficulty sitting in chairs all day long. They need more flexible/comfortable seating options to enhance student engagement and learning. Studies show that students learn better when they are physically active and comfortable.
Some of the assistive technology options that would be provided with this project are wobble stools, a standing desk, wobble cushions, and pencil grips.
These are options that will give my students the opportunity to sit comfortably and move around while they are learning. The stools are for our table to give another option instead of a chair. For those who would prefer to just add a wobble cushion to their chair, that will be an option as well. The standing desk will be an option for students who like to move around instead of sitting while learning.
This project would significantly help my students stay engaged in our learning throughout the day. I want them to feel comfortable and at home in our classroom. I cannot wait to see all of the things we can do with flexible seating!
