Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 24 first grade students who are English Language Learners. My students are a mixture of different personalities. For example, I have students who always want to help their classmates in finishing their work. I also have students who support their friends whenever they feel sad or lonely. If any problem immerses in my class, my students always want to find a solution in order to assist each other. My class is special because they are great kids who have their own individual strengths and challenges at home but come to school excited and ready to learn. They are enthusiastic in all subject areas, but they light up the most during writer's workshop, read alouds, and Science. What stands out the most about my students is that although they struggle with writing, they always try their best to be writers.
My Project
As a first year teacher, I am starting many projects by scratch. By having white copy paper, I can implement individual projects in all subject areas bringing art into our classroom. My students are also very enthusiastic with writing their own books, that many of them write about 3 stories a day! This takes a lot of printing in order to give them graphic organizers to help them organize their thoughts and sketches. My first graders also love Science and by having white paper I can also integrate art into the lessons.
Furthermore, my students are Spanish speakers and are developing English as their second language.
By having audio books in a literacy center, it can help them develop their fluency and phonetic sounds by hearing close read alouds in their centers. I also chose informational text since we have been distinguishing fiction from non fiction books. These books will also reinforce the lesson. Lastly, my students love animal books and would to learn more about animals through books.
