Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Fifth-grade students are eager to learn and often times, just as eager to demonstrate their newly created knowledge. When given the opportunity to choose the way to showcase their learning, not all students prefer a pencil and paper test. Some students show learning through knowledge webs, through writing a rhyme, song, or poetry, or even creating a multimedia presentation. One wonderful aspect of teaching such diverse students is having a first-hand view of their creativity.
Our school serves as a Chicago neighborhood school with a Bilingual Magnet program.
Over 80% of our students are low income and come from at-risk households. With the high population of English language learners in our classrooms, effective writing instruction is most meaningful when there are opportunities for authentic writing across disciplines.
My Project
Students in my 5th-grade Writing and Social Studies class will be exploring Pre 1492 American migration. In order to do this, students will write an essay answering the question, " To what extent does where a person lives influence how a person lives?" The students must have privacy and less distractions when organizing and constructing an essay and the Privacy Boards will ensure just that!
In addition to the privacy boards, groups of 5th graders will need materials to construct accurate models of a Native American village.
We will need modeling clay, wood pieces, various colors of felt, and paint to make the best models that we can! The large map and globe will be particularly helpful in demonstrating American migration through the Bering Strait (among other theories) I anticipate some excited and eager learners!
