Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a founding mathematics teacher in the South Bronx. We are a small public middle school with the goal of equipping our 211 students with the tools necessary to gain entrance into the best NYC high schools, and progress from there to college.
Last year I started a very successful after-school photography program. Twelve of our students immersed themselves into photography and created work that stimulated their minds and gave them a great sense of pride.
This program teaches them both the technical and aesthetic aspects of photography. In the tradition of Eugene Smith and Mary Ellen Mark, they will all be creating portfolios with the goal of gaining admittance into selective arts high schools.
I have already secured the film and processing to get our children shooting, as well as a professional photographer from Manhattan who is guiding my lessons, providing visuals for class, arranging field trips to the studios of some of the best NYC photographers, and mentoring the students.
The popularity of the program has given us the opportunity to expand the class to 15 students. Currently we have 11 manual SLR cameras. I have a vision of every student having their own camera for the duration of the class and learning to make photography an intrinsic part of their life. This is the second of two grants each seeking five (5) fully manual Vivitar v3800N cameras with 50mm F1.7 lenses and cases.
