Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It’s a brisk Monday morning and there are two hundred cadets formed up in their companies, standing at attention and saluting the flag as reverie is being played over the loud speaker. Cries of “Order Arms!” are called out and in unison, all cadets drop their arms and wait for the next command. Shortly afterward, the company leaders dismiss the students to their first period class. A short knock on my door confirms that the cadets are ready to enter the classroom to begin learning.
I teach at a public charter school that prepares students for careers in military, fire and law enforcement.
The school is dedicated to instilling high standards of integrity, ethics and behavior while pursuing high academic standards. Many of my students (seventy percent) receive free or reduced price lunch and around twenty percent of the students are English Language Learners. Despite the lack of resources that are available for our school, the students are eager to learn and are focused on achieving their goals upon graduation! Many students have registered or are in the process of registering for the military. (Marines are very popular on the campus).
My Project
Summit Leadership Academy (SLAHD) introduced a Journalism elective this past school year for the students to have another fun class to choose from. The school is in the process of procuring the foundation material needed to support the students in this new endeavor.
The materials provided by this project will allow the students to create their own podcasts, school videos and digital recordings.
Students will learn the necessary skills to record, edit and post their work for the school body to enjoy while being informed on topics that are specifically tailored for their particular age group.
Most students do not have experience with technology that is needed to create the digital projects that are incorporated within the Journalism curriculum. This technology and assignments that require the use of technology, including iPads and creating YouTube videos, will be present once the students leave school and it is imperative that they are exposed to these tools and projects prior to leaving high school.
