My students need journals with space for pictures, pencils that are small to fit their hands, erasers, Post-it notes and a large easel pad for modeled writing.
My kindergarten students attend a Title I school. We are an inner city charter school which was recently named a Priority school. The students come each morning with smiles on their faces and stories and hugs to share.
The kindergarten students are like ocean sponges.
They want to soak up knowledge and new experiences. They are ready to learn as much as they can. By the time they walk into school, they have overcome the struggles of poverty, broken homes and homelessness. Our charter school strives to meet all needs of our learners. We are a small school with big futures.
My Project
This project will get needed supplies for students to become great writers. The students come to school with millions of stories to share. By getting the primary journals, they will be able to put their stories on paper in words and pictures.
We need primary journals to put our stories into written word.
We do that with pictures as much as words. We need an easel chart to use in modeled writing lessons. As beginning writers, we learn by group writing. Having examples hanging in our room will allow us to become authors. A table top easel will make it easy to teach small group lessons anywhere in the room.
We will use the journals every day during our Daily 5 literacy block. Since we are just learning, we need erasers for our mistakes and Post-it notes for new words and ideas. I have noticed in the past that many kindergarten students are more successful with pencils that fit the size of their hands. Golf pencils do the trick and are easy to store.
These journals will allow the kindergarten students to be creative during their writing. The space for drawing is key! Kids tell stories in pictures. By having personal journals with space for drawing, every child can be successful. And who doesn't love Post it notes? Many young authors want words spelled correctly and since not all words will be on the Word Wall Post-it notes solve the problem. I can write the needed word and students can copy from the Post-it Note and then either keep the word inside their journal or share it with the class on our Word Wall.
