Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember your early childhood masterpieces? I look back fondly on my time spent creating and celebrating art, and want to provide the same creative outlet for my students. In our class, we love to integrate the arts into our math, ELA, science and social studies units.
My class is a class of 25 kindergartners with unique personalities and varying academic levels ranging from kindergarten to 2nd grade.
We are a kindergarten ICT class, 40% special education students and 60% regular education students. My students are part of a larger school community of about 700 students. Compared to other New York City Schools we are much smaller. While our small size has a lot of pros there are also many cons; one being the lack of space that our school has along with a smaller budget. While we try to use our budget wisely providing a great number of resources for our students, we often do not have many of the things that we need to help all our students be successful.
My Project
Where have all the art supplies gone? We are approaching the third trimester of school and the art materials show it! We are in desperate need of basic craft supplies, paper, paint brushes, colored pencils and so much more. Every week we strive to incorporate visual arts into the curriculum, but it is a struggle to keep up with the cost and demand of the materials.
In this increasingly test-driven world of education, I strive to provide opportunities for my students to show what they know through non-traditional methods and to express themselves creatively.
Children do their best when a lesson engages them, and that is exactly what visual arts does when incorporated into reading, writing, math, science and social studies. Please help us replenish our materials, so we can continue to become aspiring artists!
