My 3rd graders are in a self-contained setting for students with Autism. Students with Autism have difficulty expressing themselves and when they get frustrated, they sometimes feel helpless and shut down, stop trying. However, this year I have a group of aspiring artists. I see their self esteem rise every time they finish an art project. I would like to provide my students with a variety of projects that will allow them to be as creative as they want to be.
I want my students to feel empowered and proud of themselves.
Since art is a place where they feel this way, I want to be able to have the supplies they need. Because we are in a Title I school, funds are limited and we do not have access to all the materials that my students need.
Art is highly important in education. It helps children express themselves in a creative unique way. When it comes to art, there are endless possibilities for children to express themselves. Art liberates the child to find their uniqueness which helps to build confidence. As Maryann F. Kohl put it, “Art is a place for children to learn to trust their ideas, themselves, and to explore what is possible.”
Because I want them to be able to feel that freedom and confidence, I want to supply them with more art materials such as watercolor paints and cardstock.
The storage cart would help us keep our art supplies organized. We also need flexible seating options for them to feel more comfortable in their work space. With the wobble chairs and cushions, my students will not only strengthen their core but they will be actively engaged in their projects.
