I am a school counselor in a public, K-5 elementary school. The students at my school are a diverse group culturally, ethnically, and economically. I work primarily with students in grades 3 through 5, providing classroom lessons and individual and small-group counseling services.
Albert Einstein said, "Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death." In order for me to provide the highest quality of school counseling services for my students, it is imperative that I continue to seek out opportunities to update and expand my knowledge and skills.
I plan to do so by engaging in the virtual version of the American School Counselor Association's annual conference this summer.
My Project
I hope to participate in the virtual version of the American School Counselor Association's Annual Conference, this year held in Los Angeles, California. In this project I am requesting funding for the tuition cost of participating in the virtual conference.
This conference features expert presentations on up-to-date practices in the school counseling field.
This year's virtual conference sessions will focus on use of data, coping skills, and ethics presentations.
The topics presented through the virtual conference will help me improve my practice. For example, school counselors must be able to determine which interventions are most effective with students. This conference will allow me to hone my skills in the use of achievement, discipline, and other data to determine which interventions are working and which need to be altered or eliminated, thus increasing my effectiveness as a school counselor. Conference presentations on coping skills will allow me to implement classroom and counseling interventions that help students learn how to regulate their emotions and achieve their best in all facets of their lives. Ethics presentations will ensure that I am up-to-date on court cases that impact my practice with students.
My students deserve the best school counselor available, and I am committed to meeting that challenge. To fulfill that role, it is imperative that I keep up-to-date with cutting edge practices and information in the areas of use of data, coping skills, and ethical issues. The 2018 American School Counselor Association virtual conference will provide an important opportunity for me to enhance my knowledge and improve my skills in my chosen profession.
