Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an out-of-classroom teacher returning to the classroom after two years. I am really going to try and make this a banner year for my class. I am going to teach a fifth grade CTT class, which includes an even mix of special education students and regular education students.
Non-fiction reading has been an issue for this class specifically for the past two years. So before they are off to middle school, I really want these students to be able to read and comprehend non-fiction pieces successfully.
This is a challenge especially with the students who are classified as having special needs. The class, as a whole is reading on a third grade level, with the special education students reading even lower in some cases. Having a lower functioning class makes teaching non-fiction an even bigger challenge because the students often get intimidated by these long books full of information and words that they don't know.
This is where ASK magazine comes in. ASK is a kids’ magazine about science, history, and more. Written with 6-to 9-year-olds in mind, ASK magazine is about everything from dinosaurs to cathedrals, from distant stars to microbes.
You might be surprised that I've chosen a magazine for younger kids, but for students to be successful in comprehension, they need to be able to read the article. The students need to practice the non-fiction strategies that I teach them, with reading that is appropriate for their level.
Please consider given the ANSWER to what we are ASKing for, I know that the kids would love to have this as a resource in our classroom library.
