My students need 25 individual sets of algebra tiles, an algebra tiles teacher kit, a set of equate tiles, and several workbooks including: pre-algebra & algebra made simple, hands on algebra, and two algebra tiles workbooks.
One teacher, over one hundred students, at all levels and abilities coming in and out of a classroom all day long. That's my world right now. I am the only math teacher at my school so I teach all the courses we offer.
With the state mandating that all students must pass 4 of 7 EOIs starting with this years freshman (who are in Algebra I), there is no more weak student in math who coasts through with a D average. Because regardless of that D average if they don't pass the EOI they don't graduate.
For those of you not from Oklahoma we have 7 EOI tests (Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, English II, English III, Biology I, and US History) All students must pass Algebra I, English II and two others to graduate. You can enable my students to obtain a better grasp of abstract concepts by providing them with a classroom set of algebra tiles and equate tiles as well as a variety of workbooks such as prealgebra & algebra made simple and two workbooks including algebra tiles activities to reinforce abstract concepts.
With these manipulative's the students will be able to engage in active hands on learning that will help them master concepts. Because of the current school budgets the school can't afford to purchase the manipulative's my students so desperately need. You can help make sure that in four years we don't have to tell someone they can't graduate because they couldn't pass the Algebra I EOI.
