Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students haven't had much experience with art. Most of them are uninterested because, to them, art is just drawing. They haven't had many examples of artists that look like them. I want to show them that everyone is creative and that their creative possibility is endless. I want them to see that there is more to life than some of the struggles that they're facing everyday. Art can be used as an outlet and a healthy distraction outside of social media, video games or possibly harmful activities.

I just want to give my students the chance to experience something they never have before.

My Project

As a Title 1 school in Maryland, funding is very limited. Students in the city are not afforded the same opportunities or learning experiences as students in the county. This is my first year as a full time art teacher, and my school's first full time art teacher in a few years. I really want to make an impact on my students.

I truly believe that with the supplies to run an art room, I can have a truly impactful year.

I want to push my students to be more creative than they ever imagined, and really let them know how limitless and capable they are.
