We are a Title I school in a major city and a lot of our students come from difficult home lives. It's a high poverty area, and this year our school budget has been cut severely. We need your help!
We are one of the few schools in the area that has a strong art program, and I am so grateful for it.
Over the past six years that I have been here, I have seen more and more students turn to art as a form of expression. These students love art, and I think it's important to keep that love growing.
I had a student this past school year that brought their own graphic novel to class and just couldn't put it down. At first I was frustrated because I was demonstrating a new drawing technique but then I realized something: I should be helping other students to be this motivated about reading! And as the school's Art Teacher I could start my own library of graphic novels.
I think it's important for students to see that there are professional artists whose job it is to create these wonderful books.
And with the few books I had purchased last year I can tell that the students also love this graphic novel library idea. They were constantly asking to take them home and would bring them back to me the next day with a big smile on their face saying that they read the whole book in one night! I'd love to keep this love for reading growing.
