Help me give my students Art supplies and materials such as pastels, foam tape, and drawing paper to create their masterpieces! This includes materials for fine-art, studio-craft, and S.T.E.A.M. wearable-technology works.
Our school is a low-income, Title I community with approximately 300 students of all abilities and levels. We have a high number of students from trauma and adverse childhood experiences whose social-emotional needs are positively influenced by making art, designing and building, hands-on, project-based learning. Our students have tested quite low in literacy and we are working school-wide in all grades to integrate literacy into nearly everything we do.
Making art is something that everyone can be successful in; it helps kids release stress, process their emotions, and have positive outlets for pent-up energy.
Art education is a powerful place to practice SEL (social-emotional learning) along with growth mindset development, especially during this global pandemic. I am working on incorporating literacy and social-emotional work into all of our art projects this year. Additionally, I embed S.T.E.A.M. activities into their art projects all throughout the year.
My Project
This project seeks to supplement the budget of a low-income high-poverty school. Your support will provide materials needed to allow our students freedom of expression, supplies to promote social-emotional-learning, and methods to achieve success in applied, project-based-learning. Your dollars will be matched on November 30th so this will help us reach our goal even faster! This wishlist includes materials for fine-art, studio-craft, and S.T.E.A.M. wearable-technology.
While students are happy to be learning new techniques, I also allow for "art exploration time" (free choice) and value process over product; students learn to enjoy the process of making rather than feeling stress of producing an end result.
Sometimes means less artwork to display, but generally results in less "cookie-cutter" style, more unique and innovative art. It impacts the child in a more powerful way; they feel more personally invested in and connected to their projects. Students able to internalize and assimilate lessons into their own lives and reciprocally embed themselves into the work. The end result is usually more excited and motivated students who are PUMPED UP by their hands-on, project-based-learning.
