Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 9th and 10th grade Global Studies at an alternative high school in midtown Manhattan. Our student population comes mostly from the vibrant neighborhoods of Washington Heights, Central Harlem, and East Harlem.
I wish to supply students at my school with a space to fully explore their artistic talents and incorporate these skills in their curricular classes. With adequate materials for students that are passionate for visual arts, I want to provide students with ideal environment to hone their burgeoning skills. I have given two elective “Intro to Art” classes where we have covered topics like perspective, still life, 3-D figures, among others.
In my holistic approach to education, I have tried to encourage my students to demonstrate all their talents when taking on their core curricular classes- including the arts. As a small school, our resources are limited. We do not have an official art teacher- thus my involvement as an elective teacher. Also, we are a school that requires our students to graduate by completing a series of academic portfolios. Student creativity is encouraged in these collections of academic learning.
In order to provide an “artistically advanced” environment for my students, I wish to provide them individual sketchbooks and a class set of watercolor markers. These materials should be enough for about 20 students.
Why do I feel this proposal should be funded? The arts in urban education have not been prioritized and many students' talents have not been fully tapped because of this. One way we can reengage students in their academic subjects is through the development of the arts.
