I work in a great school in San Francisco that is based on the premise that children learn best when taught using the arts. Hands-on projects are especially effective with younger children, and research bears this out.
We use the arts to teach reading, writing, math and science. But budget cuts have made this harder and harder to implement. You can help my new Kindergarten class by helping us to get art supplies. We need so many things - with 180 school days there are a lot of art materials we need!
We use an approach known as "emergent curriculum" - that is, we listen closely to the the children and try and make the curriculum fit their paths of inquiry. This means that we need a lot of different materials to be able to explore these avenues with them! This includes paper pre-cut into the shapes of heads and hands, glitter and sequins, containers of buttons, beads and elastic for stringing, bits and pieces of exciting collage materials, "wiggly" eyes, feathers, marbling kits, etc. etc.!
