Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is on the far southwest side of a large city in Arizona. We have over eighty percent of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our school size is small and we try to expose them to as many opportunities as we can while at school because we are in a low-income area.
Our school is working very hard to improve and grow.
Our scholars practice their PAWS (practice self-control, always be kind, work with the best effort and strive for success).
The specific students I work with are all English Language Learners. This means that English is their second language so they are in my class to gain English proficiency and be fully in a mainstream classroom. They need explicit instruction in reading, writing, grammar, listing, speaking, and vocabulary.
My Project
I would like to use these materials to help my students explore with their imagination. I want to give students a variety of ways to be creative. We often do not have time to explore this area with testing and curriculum. My students need a creative outlet as we are hitting the mid-year mark.
My plan is to offer arts and crafts time after the mid-year testing to reward students for their hard work and attendance.
There would be a variety of projects. Some of the projects will be ornament-making for families. We will use wood and paint to craft ornaments. There will also be a pencil bag decorating using fabric paint. Another project will be painting rocks for our school garden to beautify it. We will also have some other fun activities that we can continue during the year like looming bracelets, fusing beads, and stenciling using the spirograph for cards. These can be used throughout the year to celebrate holidays and as an incentive/ reward system for good behavior. I am excited to bring these engaging projects to the classroom!
