Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember back when school was fun? We had time for art and projects. With state assessments and budget cuts, these fun things about school have gone away like the dinosaur. My ELD and special ed students need hands-on and creative learning opportunities to help them feel successful.
My students are new to the US.
Most of them do not speak the language, are struggling with surviving in their new environments, cannot communicate well, and are trying their best to be successful with the educational standards of today. Textbook learning is not going to help them assimilate to a new culture, open up to speaking or learn a new language. They need hands-on, entertaining and engaging lessons to bring learning to life.
My Project
My students many not be able to express in words what they know or can do, but they can certainly show me. With art, anything is possible. My students can excel at expressing their ideas visually, and work together in groups to increase communication. I am requesting colored paper, markers, colored pencils, highlighters, and poster materials for my students to use. They will work in groups to create a project of interest to them during ELD (English Language Development) class. The joy of seeing their finished projects decorating the classroom makes everyone happy. They can take ownership of their education.
My students are trying so hard to survive in a new culture, attend school, deal with hormones, and learn a foreign language, all while trying to make their parents proud.
I want to make school fun for them by making knowledge easily accessible. Who wouldn't love to use art to learn?
