Our school is a very unique and diverse school where students want to learn and grow. They imagine worlds both alike and different from their own, they construct objects out of any resources they can manipulate with their small hands, and they see an opportunity for creation even when adults cannot.
Our students and their families come from all over the world especially Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.
They are an enthusiastic, energetic, diverse group with a hunger for learning and an unbridled capacity for creativity when provided with tools and materials they can access.
Our teachers and families are working hard together daily to support students in developing their mathematical and spatial reasoning skills, as well as harnessing their creative energy to help develop their intellectual abilities. Our students naturally connect reading, writing, math, social studies, art, and science together, but we need more high quality, creative materials and experiences to allow them to connect all of those subject matters in a comprehensive way while reaching the Common Core and Next Generation State Standards.
We have a 75% free and reduced-price lunch population and a 36% ELL population.
My Project
In an uncertain world where our scholars have to look to imaginary superheroes with powers as the only way to help others, I want to show my students that heroes are all around them.
I want to give my artists the opportunity to research real superheroes that have made a positive difference in our world and then design a 3D sculpture version of their chosen superhero to show off to the public.
I will steer my students towards such heroes as Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malala to help them understand that one person CAN make a difference.
We will use the paper mache gauze, wire, styrofoam balls, and paint to design our versions of these heroes all while learning the process of creating armatures and finished sculptures.
The students will present their heroes along with a digital book written by them as how these real-life heroes changed the world.
