Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is an Art Focus school and is part of a vibrant community in the heart of Washington D.C.. The students that we serve come from many different backgrounds, our families come from over 30 different countries. This creates an atmosphere that emphasizes respect and diversity.
As the art teacher I facilitate student’s exploration of many art materials, supporting young children’s development of fine motor skills, problem solving and independence.
Through group discussions we learn art concepts, artistic expressions from different cultures and practice open dialogue.
My Project
The requested art books such as "Press Here" and "Beautiful Oops!" will fill in many important roles in the art classroom, from introducing students to artists, art movements and art concepts, to supporting their reading and comprehension skills.
These book will not only be read to them as part of a lesson, they will also be available to all students in our classroom library, allowing students to follow their interests and to independently discover the vast art world, including titles in Spanish.
My hope is that a specialized art library will help to integrate art making with art history and it will bring artists from around the world to the hands of my students.
I selected books that explore elements of art in creative ways, that reflect the life of different artists, and that are known to be engaging for a wide range of students.
