Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are smart and artistic and excited about helping our world in any way possible. They are a mix of all types of young people. Most of them are not in any other extra activities like sports or clubs. They do love Art however, and I love to give them opportunities to shine. I have many students who are classified "at risk" of not graduating. I have many low income students. For many of my students, my art class is the only place they receive any positive reinforcement or success of any kind.
Every project I have introduced to these kids has been met with such hard work and excitement that it has made me a more excited and motivated teacher.
I don't want to let them down! These students express themselves so beautifully through their artwork that I have been blessed to be able to see their hearts and a bit of their souls. They are truly wonderful young people and I hope to help them grow even more in their life journey.
My Project
My amazing Art students have spent their year raising money through various fundraisers to donate to a wonderful organization called Sea Turtle Inc. The purpose of Sea Turtle Inc. is to rescue, heal, and release injured or baby sea turtles. My students have been learning all about the twelve endangered species in this part of the Rio Grande Valley. We chose the sea turtles to try to help this year. They raised $1000 dollars! My students have been creating art work to educate others about the plight of the endangered sea turtles. We would like to deliver the check ourselves and to go on a tour of the facility so that the students can see what their efforts are doing first hand. Unfortunately travel and food is expensive! They don't want to use the money they earned for themselves and take away from the turtles!
My students will be so excited to hand deliver the money they have raised to help the endangered sea turtles and to know they CAN make a difference!
For some of them, art class is the only place where they are able to truly excel and to be successful. The confidence and knowledge they will gain from this experience will help them in every aspect of their education.Any help would be so greatly appreciated.
