My students are fourth graders who are from high need families. I average 32 students in my classroom. The majority of my students receive free or reduced rate lunch. All of my students are second language learners and love school because they are fed and safe.. They are a special bunch of kids with some incredible artistic skills. They want to learn but are held back because they are worried about home, family or challenges they face in life. Many of my students come to me angry because of life situations and need a positive outlet for their emotions. Many of my students need to sort out intense emotions that they don’t understand. Art can be that outlet. My goal for them is to give them a solid foundation and teach them how to take time and handle emotions in a positive way so they can move forward successfully.
My students are natural artists and come from some very challenging living situations. The easels, drying racks, brushes, and paint will support students in a positive manner by putting their energy into a positive and creative activity. Many of my kids need a positive outlet during difficult times in their lives. They may need to express themselves with their art and spend some quiet time in solitude where they are safe and nurtured. The easels and paint materials will allow students the solitude and creative time of manage their emotions. Having materials that offer students a place to be creative is an important part of a school culture. Art materials will give my kids the outlet they need to focus on their studies.
