I am a first grade teacher at P.S.169 in Brooklyn, New York. The majority of my students come from homes where English is not their first language. For many of my students, school is the only time they have the opportunity to speak English. About 89% of my students receive free lunch.
The children have been working so hard in Readers' and Writers' Workshops. You would be amazed at the success of their work. They have completed units such as Writing for readers, Authors as Mentors, How-to-Books, Character analysis, non-fiction reading and research. These are only six and seven year old children! Seeing the smiles on their faces at the end of the unit would bring joy to anyone.
One of the last units we will be working on is to study the style of an illustrator of children's books. As I read the books to them, we take notes on their observations of the various styles of the illustrator. We discuss the types of materials used as well as its impact on the story. This discussion helps to develop visual skills, comparisons, language development and the appreciation of different art styles. Hopefully, the experience will allow my students to learn another genre in art: collages.
I would love to present them with a more relaxed and hands-on unit before the end of the year. We are presently doing an author study on Ezra Jack Keats. This author is famous for his collage work/watercolors. It would be wonderful to have available all the materials needed for collages such as watercolors,various types of papers and the multitude of materials kit. My eighteen first graders would be artists at work and would definitely not want to be disturbed.
