This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I serve children in the urban community of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The children I serve are with me for 2 years for 1st and second grades where they learn ELA which is English and language arts. I co-teach with another teacher who is responsible for another subject. Most of these children are African American and come from homes that sometimes cannot provide them with basic school supplies like crayons, color pencils, and markers that are so important at this age level.
My Project
Very often literacy requires students to use creativity which requires them to use very basic supplies such as crayons, color pencils, and other basic school supplies. Very often I find myself every school year buying these supplies myself throughout the school year many times 4 or 5 times during the year. I feel that if parents do not have to worry about getting the basic things then they can focus on other things their children might need. Having a die cast cutter and laminator helps us to decorate our class.
