When words fall short, painting, drawing and coloring are some of the few means young adults with autism have to express themselves. Without supplies, however, our expression is silenced.
My fantastic students are from a community in California that has a resilient spirit despite the oppression it has faced; especially in times of economic hardship.
My students come from families who often work multiple jobs to make ends meet and still make the time to care for their special needs children. My students are funny, fantastic and all have a diagnosis of Moderate to Severe Autism. Some are verbal while others are are non-verbal.
My Project
We are requesting some basic art supplies to replenish our bare closet. Help provide my students with some paint, color paper, markers and crayons so we can do basic arts and crafts activities during our lessons! Since students with autism tend to be visual learners, you will help us learn about the ocean by allowing us to cut out sea creatures and paint them. Instead of cutting and pasting photocopied dittos, we can do portraits of Martin Luther King. My students will be able to practice their gross and fine motor skills as well as exercise their creative minds with this gift.
Art is being cut from schools across California.
While our program aims to be as inclusive as possible, when class numbers rise in the high 30s and 40s it becomes difficult to be included in classes such as art, especially for my students who have the most severe sensory needs. Please give my incredible students access to the materials they need to exercise their creative brains!
