Artistic Technology in Motion: STEAM for Dance and Healthy Lifestyles
Help me give my students four iPod touch digital music players to allow them to play music, research, utilize tutorials, revise their work through video feedback, and learn music editing and health applications.
Our school is a 6-8 IB middle school with both an English language and Spanish Immersion program. Students come from diverse backgrounds and bring rich cultural experiences to the classroom. I am new to the school this fall and have been deeply impressed by the sense of community and support generated by students, families, and school staff.
My students are energetic, highly creative, warm, caring, and incredibly motivated to develop their dance and performance skills.
During the first few weeks of school, I have been blown away by their passion and excitement for our new dance program.
One student in particular was so happy he got to have dance that he did a backflip on the first day of class.
While technology may not seem relevant to dance class at first glance, creativity is a scientific process. My students would be thrilled at the opportunity to use modern tech capabilities for tasks such as research, revision, body alignment, health and wellness tracking, and reflection.
My Project
Technology is an essential part of modern health and wellness, as well as artistic design. Viral dance challenges, health trackers, online research, and digital sound and video editing are a mainstay of our popular and creative culture. iPods will allow students to tap in to and learn how to use these resources more efficiently.
Today's students are tomorrow's artists and designers; they need to be able to understand and utilize technological research, design, and editing tools in order to develop the skills necessary for participating in the modern artistic process.
On a basic level, students cannot efficectively access music selections, revise, or edit their work without technology. From a deeper perspective, this technology is necessary for students to begin learning how to integrate the scientific and creative processes required for true innovation.
